Comments The Aquacat is the nicest liveaboard dive boat I have been on my 40+ years of diving; huge dive deck, full tanks, good ladders awesome dive crew. My room, number 8, had a king size bed, large in suite bath and a nice large shower. Two showers on the deck made coming in off a dive almost a pleasure in itself. The crew was awesome, friendly and amenable to a person. The food was good, the weather was great, except for one night that some members of the group said was stormy and rocky, I slept through it.

This was my third trip on the Aquacat and I thoroughly enjoyed it as did my wife. Until we did the washing machine dive and her vertigo kicked in for the rest of the trip. So if vertigo is a problem for you, don’t do the washing machine dive. I was trying to stay behind the guide to hit the current just right; I overcorrected and got too far to the left so I spent the dive bouncing off the wall. But it was still a great dive.

We did the shark dive. Chum hanging on a wreck. Lots of grey reef sharks, grouper and other species feasting on the chum. Captain Sam free dived down to the wreck and hung there for a minute or two. That was impressive. We saw lots of grey reef sharks on several dives. It was the only trip I have done where you would see a shark and shrug your shoulders, except for Tahiti and Cocos. Some friends did a trip on one of the Blackbeard sailboats the previous week and they saw a Tiger Shark on the site called Lobster No Lobster.

Only two things marred the trip. One couple from our group had health problems at the last minute and had to cancel. Of course, they could not get a refund so their cabin remained empty. There was a pair from our group sharing a cabin, a male and a female, and one of them asked to use the empty cabin but was refused. He even offered to pay the single supplement but was still denied. Even if they didn’t want to book the revenue, it would have been a nice addition to the tip pool. Not only that, he would have been extremely generous at tip time anyway for the consideration. Very puzzling.

The other was the condition of two of the dive sites. The site called Madison Avenue is dead. It was dead when I was on it back in 2008. I didn’t dive it this trip but several of my buddies came up early and confirmed that it had not recovered. It is baffling why they still take divers there. The other site was called North Shore. It was completely covered with algae. It was heartbreaking to see it; I have seen it in Cozumel and Little Cayman to a lesser extent but not as bad as this particular site. I asked why we were diving here and was told that you can see what a great site it used to be, and you could tell it was probably a great site. But why did we dive a dead reef? Other than these two sites, most of what we dived was in very good condition.

You owe it to yourself to go on the Aquacat at least once in your diving career. They ask for a 15% tip at the end of trip briefing. Use your own discretion.
