Comments Warm water, beautiful corals and no covid made for a relaxing week of diving in the Red Sea north sites, including Daedalus and Elphinstone. Windy conditions resulted in some sporty, short zodiac rides to our drop-in points. Multiple dive boat operators moored at most sites, but guides were very successful at dropping us at portions of the reef where we saw few other divers.

The Emperor Elite was in good shape, with a well-organized, skilled and friendly crew. They gave an exhaustive safety briefing, including review of fire suppression and health/safety equipment, including AED, O2, etc., on the first day. Some guests may have felt this was too long but, given incidents in recent years, no one could complain about lack of information about fire suppression or health and safety equipment. Meals, served buffet-style, except for one special sit-down evening, were very impressive, with lots of variety and interesting flavors. Tea and coffee, including an espresso machine, were always available.

Current at some sites required quick drop-in and descent from the RIB. Negative entry plus the high salinity of the Red Sea meant most of us were weighted more heavily than normal. In some cases, we were able to end our dive back at the main boat, but some dives required surfacing, removing equipment in the water and hauling back into the RIB. RIB crew were a big help for those of us who could not vault out of the water back into the boat.

I am a very slow diver - I like to drop in a proceed to examine details of reef and ocean life. These dives seemed to be more about swimming around, looking for things. I understand that folks want big stuff and critter sightings, but this wasn't to my taste. The guides were sympathetic and organized a 'macro dive.' We did see turtles, a few Oceanic White-Tip sharks and many small, colorful reef fish. Most impressive were the enormous corals, which looked healthy and growing.

We arrived in Egypt a few days before the invasion of Israel and, as stated in recent Undercurrent newsletter, that activity seemed very far away. There were no apparent consequences to our dive or travel plans. Following the week on the boat, we bussed 6 hours to Luxor for a week-long Nile cruise. Even in Cairo, where we spent a few days at the end of our trip, life seemed to proceed normally.
