Comments ]I spent 5 days diving with Barra Reef Divers as part of a trip organized by a U.S. dive dive shop. I can’t say enough about the great service offered by Russell and his team of dive masters. After sorting out equipment set-up and weighting on the first day of diving, the crew had everyone’s gear set up a ready to go for each dive thereafter. Dives are from zodiacs, launched from the beach which was quite an adventure. Dive sites were all within 10-20 minute ride.

Our group was comprised primarily of experienced divers and the dive masters treated the dive groups accordingly, providing excellent pre-dive briefings and then allowing buddy groups some flexibility during dives, while still paying good attention to safety and dive etiquette.

The dive shop has a 10 meter pool which was a great place to remove wetsuits after dives, with convenient drying racks available alongside. Beer, soda and cocktails were also available at a self-service bar; a nice feature to have after the last dive of the day.

Dive conditions were challenging on several of the dive sites with low visibility and strong surge, so not an ideal location for inexperienced divers. Coral cover isn’t great but marine life was plentiful nonetheless. We encountered manta rays at cleaning stations on several dives and octopus were plentiful, as were various species of bottom dwelling rays. The shop arranged a shallow muck dive in Inhambane Bay, as this was of interest to our group even though it’s not one of the dive operators normal lineup of dive sites. On this dive we encountered frog fish, a number of species of cow fish, and numerous invertebrate species.

This was my first time diving in East Africa so I don't have a good baseline for comparison. Overall I'd rate the diving as sub-par as compared to destinations in Asia and perhaps comparable to second-tier locations in the Caribbean.

We did see a pair of humpback whales on the way to one of the dive sites; an unexpected bonus. We were told that whale sharks are sighted from time to time as well.

Accommodations were at Neptune's Lodge and Bar, which is situated about 100 yards from the dive shop. As with the dive shop, service was outstanding. We were one of the first groups of divers from the U.S. to stay at the resort and they went out of their way to make the trip a memorable experience. Rooms were nice; all with en suite bathrooms, A/C and an adequate number of electrical outlets for dive electronics. Food was good, with a number of options. The resort owners arranged for several dinners offsite in order to give our group an opportunity too more of the area. There were a number of tour options as well for non-divers or those who wanted to take a day off.

If you'd like to dive somewhere off the beaten path, I highly recommend.
