Amos Nachoum

For many years, Amos Nachoum, always warm and cheery, came to our local dive club parties, told stories, and listened to ours, none of which measured up to his. What perhaps we didn't understand about Amos becomes very clear in the documentary "The Picture of His Life." His complete dedication to his sole mission in life: his photography. We divers can surely be thankful for Amos' single-minded pursuit of the next great shot since no one has produced underwater big animal photographs like Amos. He has set the standard.

"The Picture of His Life" is about that pursuit. To capture underwater shots of a polar bear, no doubt the most frightening animal a diver may encounter (who sweats a great white shark anymore?), Amos is after his most impressive goal ever. I saw the film in a packed movie theatre, mostly nondivers, as part of the San Francisco Jewish Film festival, and at the picture's conclusion, the audience erupted in applause. One doesn't have to be a diver to become absorbed in Amos, his life's work, and the film.

The film is now being featured in Jewish film festivals worldwide and will get greater distribution in 2020. The making of the film is a story unto itself, so we have received permission to reprint the following piece by Israeli filmmaker Yonatan Nir, which appeared in the World Shootout Magazine....
