We Need Your Vote on the Galapagos Meltdown

In the issue we sent last week, we reported on a couple who arrived in Galapagos only to find that the liveaboard for which they had prepaid their reservation had cancelled the trip and they were not informed. Did they receive proper compensation for their disastrous journey? We need your opinion. Click here to bring up the article and to cast your vote. – the link to vote is at the end of the article.

A Substitute for Deadly Plastic

While federal law requires six-pack rings to be 100 percent photodegradable, they entrap fish, turtles, and seabirds. A small brewery at Delray Beach FL has developed an edible six-pack ring made from barley and wheat remnants left over from the brewing process. The Saltwater Brewery hopes that its edible packaging will influence change in the brewing world by feeding the marine life rather than doing it harm.

Special Offer for Tax Deductible (at least some of it) August Cocos Island Trip

Join the nonprofit Turtle Island Restoration Network aboard the Sea Hunter for Cocos Island diving expedition to aid a scientific study to protect sea turtles and sharks. You'll help catch and tag turtles, count sharks, and deploy an underwater listening device, while enjoying more than 20 dives. The date is August 19-31. The price: $7,375 and much of it may be tax-deductible. Mention Undercurrent when you sign up and receive a free rash guard and a raffle ticket worth $100 for a 1 in 100 chance to win a spot aboard a future trip. Visit www.SeaTurtles.org/expeditions or contact info@seaturtles.org

Raffled Resort

The owners of the Nautilus Resort in Kosrae, Micronesia, say they are well on the way to reaching their goal of selling a minimum of 50,000 raffle tickets at $49 each by 26th July. So far they’ve sold tickets in around 100 countries. The lucky winner gets to own the resort! www.wintheislandestates.com

A Tragically Glamorous Affair

Olivia Ku was a successful model and accomplished scuba diver, but she died during an underwater modeling assignment in Taiwan. Was she an asthmatic not medically suited to be diving or did something else go wrong? See what we have to say in the July issue of Undercurrent.

Undercurrent on Facebook

Have you checked our Facebook page? You’ll find lots of interesting items, such as Evan Sherman’s amazingly beautiful short video The Not So Silent World. This Seasick Production uses macro photography in a way you’ve never seen before. It’s stunning! www.facebook.com/Undercurrent.org

Another Deadly Shark Attack

A diver was killed by a shark off the coast of Western Australia, in a second incident in less than a week. A 60-year-old woman died from severe injuries while scuba diving near Perth. Fishermen who rescued the diver’s buddy say the shark was longer than their 17-foot boat. A surfer had died from his injuries after being bitten by a shark 60 miles to the south, five days earlier.

Tell us About Your Latest Dive Trip

We’re already gearing up for the 2017 edition of the Travelin’ Diver’s Chapbook, so we need your reports to make it even better than last year’s. Send us reviews of dive operators, liveaboards, and resorts you’ve dived since November by filling out our online form. You can also follow the link “File a Report” on the left side of our homepage at www.undercurrent.org Or after logging in, follow the “Reader Report” link in the top navigation bar.

Coral Bleaching

It might be global warming or it might be a cyclical El Niño effect to blame, but worldwide, corals are bleaching. Authorities in Thailand have shut down ten popular diving sites, stretching from Rayong province in the east down to Satun in the far south, in a bid to let the corals recover after a survey found bleaching of up to 80 per cent of some reefs. Read our story in July.
