Undercurrent next month tells the salutary tale of someone who thought that was true and those that thought otherwise. It’s something every underwater photographer will be interested in. The moral of the story is to not take something that doesn’t belong to you and if you do make that mistake, come clean without prevarication. The Problem of Ocean Acidification
When carbon dioxide dissolves in saltwater, it causes it to be more acidic, which has serious consequences for many marine animals, in particular those that use the process of calcification to grow. A more acidic environment inhibits the process of calcification, meaning corals and shelled critters and crustaceans have less material with which to make their skeletons. This not only affects these organisms directly, but also it affects all the creatures that rely on them for food such as parrotfish and even nurse sharks. Democratic Diving Destinations
George Clooney and his lawyer wife Amal, reports Grazia Magazine, have been forced to take dramatic steps to improve the security of their London home after she received death threats for defending the arrested yet democratically elected President of the Maldives, Mohammed Nasheed (formerly a scuba diver and active campaigner to stop global warming). He was arrested at gunpoint in a coup by the present autocratic government. Amal says, “It’s important that tourists know the facts of what’s happening. I don’t think they realize there’s (often) a flogging taking place less than a mile from where they are sunbathing [and scuba diving].” ’Gator Aid
Colorado may not be known for top diving spots but the Colorado Gators Reptile Park in the Saint Luis Valley wants to change all that with the aid of its alligators. At the moment, they are digging a 30-foot deep hole, around 200-feet across and fed by a geothermal spring, with an alligator habitat adjacent to the main lagoon where divers would be able swim next to a 10-foot reptile, separated only by a Plexiglass wall. To help fund the project, they are offering $100 donors a free pass for a year. (Source: Denver Post) Do you know what your diving computer is telling you?
