Join the New England Aquarium on Its Bahamas Collecting Expedition -- It’s Tax-Deductible

Great Perks for Supporting Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Important New 3D Film

Cousteau is the director of Odyssea 3D, a groundbreaking 90-minute 3D documentary about diving the oceans. But JM is on a tight schedule because he wants to have his film ready for the May Cannes Film Festival as a tribute to his father (it will be the 60th anniversary of Jacques winning the Golden Palm award for The Silent World). Cousteau’s filmmaking partner, 3D Entertainment, has launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise $300,000 to complete post-production (editing, music, sound effects, narration, and final 3D rendering). See the movie teaser here, then provide your financial support here and enjoy the great perks offered to donors.

Should the Zika-carrying Mosquito Force You to Curtail Your Dive Trip

Only if you are pregnant. Otherwise, go diving. Zyg Dembek, PhD, an epidemiologist and Undercurrent correspondent, says "Only about one in five people infected with Zika become ill, and those who do will only get a mild infection. The big public health alarm is because of the concern about Zika causing severe damage to the fetuses of pregnant women.” There are currently no vaccines to protect against Zika or dengue, carried by the same mosquitoes, but Dembek says the best preventative is a sunscreen with mosquito repellent containing DEET. The Centers for Disease Control has a detailed website about the Zika virus www.cdc.gov/zika.

One Breath

This new book by journalist Adam Skolnick aims to reveal the often-misunderstood world of competitive freediving. While exploring what draws such a wide assortment of characters to the sport, One Breath focuses on American freediver Nicholas Mevoli, who died in 2013 while pushing his limits at a freediving event in the Bahamas. Skolnick reveals the medical mysteries attached to Mevoli’s death, identifies the gaps in the sport and provides a thoughtful perspective on Mevoli and competitive freediving overall. Read Skolnick’s interview on National Public Radio and buy the book via our website.

Help a Research Dentist Figure Out How Diving Affects Your Teeth

After her first dive, Vinisha Ranna, DDS, says her teeth felt funny, although she couldn’t pinpoint what was different. “I was surprised to find that many divers had teeth problems in the course of their dives. Dental research literature offered no studies that answered my questions.” Now Ranna, a researcher at the University of Rochester, has created a survey to learn how the teeth are affected during dives so she can determine how to help divers’ oral health and prevent negative consequences. To participate in her survey, go here. If you want a copy of the results, email Karen_Black@urmc.rochester.edu
