Luckily we used charge cards when my husband and I and two friends booked this trip in August, 2005 expepcting to be on the liveaborad, Oleanda, from April 13 -21,2006. On March 8th I received a call from one of the divers in our group who said he'd just received an email message stating that the trip had been cancelled! He was the only person in our group who received the email, however when I followed-up Rongelap Expeditions said the trip was indeed cancelled - with little explanation. Rongelap Expeditions had not been very responsive to other inquiries for information throughout the months preceding the cancellation, so perhaps this is standard operating procedure for them. After months of anticipation it was more than disappointing to have the trip cancelled, and even worse the way Rongelap Expeditions handled the situation. They were very slow to credit our charge cards, but did finally get around to doing that - perhaps because we had contacted the charge card companies and complained. Even so, we lost money because of the penalties for changing airline tickets. Yes, we had trip insurance, but the coverage did not include cancellation by the dive operator simply because they didn't feel like running the trip. It is exciting to dive remote areas, but not all operaotrs are responsible. We will not be booking another trip with Rongelap Expeditions, that's for sure! |
