Comments Our sixth Odyssey charter since 2003, this one accompanied by four friends.

Except for a deco dive on San Francisco Maru – all guided, I think - diving is as you want it, guided by the limitlessly experienced crew or go on your own as your computer tells you. Both are essential to the Odyssey experience. The guides know every wreck intimately, but exploring on one’s own (in buddy pair, for us) is the way to learn the wrecks, especially if photographing. After 150+ Odyssey dives, we are still learning. The biggest and best wrecks (Shinkoku Maru, Fujikawa Maru) have four dives, including a night dive, so there is plenty of opportunity to try guided dives AND dives on your own. There are four day dives and a night dive for five days; three day dives on Saturday, but dive as many or as few as you like.

Excellent meals are served buffet style. (Cooks impressed with the fare may buy the cookbook.) Many liveaboard questionnaires ask food requirements and then take little notice of them. Two of us six recorded preferences (chemical or allergy based), and every meal, including snacks, had specifically labeled, separate dishes when necessary. Many thanks to Chef Emeren.

Odyssey is as good as it was on our first charter in 2003. Founder-owners Lenny & Cara are rarely aboard now, but the quality is unchanged. Our week, Capts Nelson & Todd, knowledgeable and companionable, led the crew. The wrecks, however, are aging. Sixty-seven years of seawater and gravity are taking their toll. The pilot house on Fujikawa Maru has collapsed, but happily the engine room, machine shop, & c., are intact. Other wrecks have deteriorated, too. If Odyssey is on your Someday List, I’d move it near the top, because the wrecks won’t last forever. And if you start soon, you can go back repeatedly, as we have!

Gear remains set up at your gear-storage-top seat on the dive deck all week, filled (Nitrox 30% or air) in place. 80 or 108 cu ft tanks available. Walk a few steps to the stern, down four steps on either side to the dive platform with your fins in hand (if a crew member didn’t pick them up all ready.) When the platform is clear . . . a crew member will put your fins on for you! One of our party calls it concierge fin service. More eloquent than I, she also writes, “I thought all the staff had a profound sense of service and hospitality and all were unfailingly kind and polite.”
