Comments Our 13th visit to dive the wonders of Palau and its surrounding waters. Arriving at night we planned a day ahead of diving to coordinate our dive plans, coordinate our dive itinerary, and overcome jet lag. Neco Marine is one of the oldest and most reliable dive operations in Palau and their dive guides and boat drivers do a fantastic job of avoiding the most crowded dive sites and knowing when sites offer the most rewarding opportunities. Over the past 10-15 years, Palau has exploded as a favored dive destination, primarily for Asian countries with fast growing diver populations., so some crowded conditions should be expected. Fabio, one of the most experienced and capable dive guides with Neco, once again showed us a week's worth of memories to be treasured, from feeding mantas to a juvenile eagle ray, to schools of spinner dolphins, and micro subjects known only to the very experienced diver. On shore, the Palau Pacific Resort (PPR) lived up to its reputation as one of the area's top resorts. One is treated like a returning family member by the staff, whose primary focus is ensuring a relaxing and fulfilling visit.
Palau recently enacted legislation to ban fishing in all but 20 percent of its waters to ensure the continued existence of its sea life and protect its water environment. Palau is now recognized as one of the foremost leaders in this regard. It can only mean excellent diving opportunities for serious divers for the future.
One thing to be aware of when planning trip to Palau is that airline travel reliability is fragile at best. We have learned to schedule an extra day at the beginning and at the end of our scheduled dates in the event of delays and cancellations in airline schedules. On two of our last three trips, United Airlines has cancelled flights going and coming back due to mechanical problems. And re-scheduling is a real hassle when there is only one flight a day.
