This was our second trip to Wakatobi (the first was Oct. 2001) and the resort has made welcome improvements, as we knew the brilliant owner, Lorenz Mader, would accomplish in the most environmentally responsible fashion. Each cottage and room now has airco; internet service (for a small fee); and the water in the taps and shower is clear, clean desalinated water (a change from the groundwater of the past). Diving here is legendary, so I probably don't need to say much other than yes, it's all true: perfect coral and benthic cover; critters galore (a macro nut heaven); fabulous staff; and the front yard dive remains one of the best in the world. The food has improved and we enjoyed more fresh veggies than we expected (in the past, the remoteness of the resort meant rather limited foods). The only real complaint I heard was that the food was not Indonesian enough--but then, I also heard American divers say how glad they were that the food was so international. The kitchen staff was more than happy to accomodate special requests (like mine for spicy sambals). We will return to Wakatobi. It may be the best diving in the world. |
