Between July and September humpback whales can often be seen off the coast of Rurutu, in the remote Austral chain. RMC offers 3-hour whale watching tours with opportunities to snorkel with them. Water conditions can be very choppy and my companion felt seasick on every trip. However we were able to swim with the whales 4-5 times on each occasion. The experience is indescribable. It is essential to book and pre-pay the trips as they are in extremely high demand. During my stay, one of the three boats on the island was commandeered by the BBC, and RMC had to turn people away even when compromising their policy of having just 6 passengers per boat. Many people who have not pre-paid were not able to go - a major disappointment given the cost and trouble of getting there. While quite modest, Pension Teutamatea is probably the best on the island and is managed by a very efficient lady who is an excellent cook. |
