The expectations to dive in Fiji were very high, maybe too high. Maybe we
were unlucky as we arrived just after a major nature event with heavy
storms and major flooding. The boat was excellent, the crew fantastic. The
dive briefing so-so and underwater indications from the guides limited to
the bare minimum. We have experienced better. Much better. The corals were
the most beautiful we have ever seen, the reef fish by the millions,
multicolor, but there was nothing really special. Pelagians very few (20
greys and 20 white tips in 35 dives), mantas few (4 or 5), turtles few (3
or 4), one sting ray and two eagle rays. No special critters. A few
pipefish, literally two leaf fish. The money for value of the boat was
excellent, the money for value of the diving was so-so. Was it worth
traveling 48 hours each way? NO!!!! Absolutely not! It's a great
destination for who lives in NZ or Australia, SE Asia, but not worth the
trip from Europe. There is so much better in Indonesia, Philippines and
Malaysia, less than half the travel time. What we did not appreciate was
the fact that 2 weeks before the start of our cruise a fuel surcharge was
dumped on us without appeal. So beware of surprises.
