This was our first time at a resort that included the meals and the diving
as part of a package. Its an expensive way to go, but boy was St.
Goerges worth it! Fred and Fran work to make this a very special place,
with very attentive dive guiding (we had a guide to ourselves on every
dive), fabulous food (thanks to Frans delicious, inventive menus and her
wonderful staff), beautiful surroundings, and great company. You just
couldnt ask for more.
Fred takes diving to a whole new plane. Having had this resort for about
30 years, he has learned some things that other dive operations either
dont know or wont tell you. Diving is a richer experience at St.
Georges Lodge. Their techniques helped us to extend our dives
(translation: Use air more slowly), and enjoy them more, too. Fred and
Fran are great at finding interesting life underwater, and you can really
see their love of their environment when youre down there with them.
Both regular air and nitrox are available at the lodge, but Fred is a big
fan of nitrox. Plan to at least give it a try, and you will be able to
enjoy the longer dive all the other guests who use nitrox enjoy. If you
arent already nitrox certified, Fred can help you to try it out on your
first dive.
The weather was far from perfect during our stay, and visibility was
sometimes low, especially near the boat. However, it was still one of the
best vacations, and some of the best diving we have ever done. Fred and
Fran were very concerned that we have the best time possible, and made it
happen.
We saw lots of Eels, Rays, Angels, Grouper, Arrow Crabs, Squirrelfish,
Coronetfish, Lobster, Cowfish, Sand Divers, Blennies, Snappers and more
Coming into the dock from our very last dive, we even saw 3 large Manatees!
We think Fred called them in as a going-away present. He would do that,
if he could!
A snorkeler friend of mine, who stayed at St. Georges some time ago, told
me that if he ever learns to dive, he will go back to St. Georges and
learn from Fred. Even a snorkeler can see that Fred has something
special.
St. Georges lodge has room for about 32 guests in its main lodge and in
the six wonderful over-the-water cabanas. Stay in the cabanas, if you can.
Its worth the little extra they cost. And, dont worry about
overcrowdingFred and Fran prefer to keep that intimate, uncrowded feel.
Thats why they dont advertise a lot. When we were there, the highest
number of guests, including us, was six. For a night or two, it was just
us.
Dining at St. Georges is family style. So, you dont have to order from a
menu or go through a buffet, but Fran will accommodate any request or
special diet. Fred & Fran are both at virtually every meal, and the
conversation is always lively, over the fabulous, plentiful food. In
between meals and diving, Fred is usually around to give a dive-related
lesson, or just chat about anything.
When we left, we left people who had become dear friends. Fred and Fran
have a way of making you feel like family. Even if we never went back
(but we will), St. Georges Lodge has made a permanent place in our
hearts.
