There is a wonderful thing happening in the palm beaches around the full
moon in September. There has been a moratorium on fishing for Goliath
Groupers in Fl. and they are staging a comeback. It is very heartening.
They gather at this time of the year off the Fl. Coast for a grouper love
fest. Dive #1. Hole in the Wall. Reef starts at 110', run along the top of
the reef with the current, drop down to 130' where you encounter a large
cavern, 60' wide and 60' deep. One enters the cavern, dips down to 140',
many Goliaths, up to 6' in length lolling about. The current carries one
through the cavern, if one has descended quickly, there is time to pull
yourself back across the reef and pass through the tunnel again. It is time
to go after 8 minutes. Open ocean ascent and dive is done @ 25 minutes.
Dive #2. Zion Wreck. 90' scattered debris field, lots of schooling fish,
Jacks, multiple bait balls and I counted 32 Goliaths serenly holding
station against the current. It was exactly like a herd of cows.It was an
honor to swim amongst them. I hooked off on the debris and floated in the
current right amongst these great fish. I have dove with the famous Potato
Cods on the GBR, that was wonderful, but, this was better. Capt. Van and
his crew are excellent, professional and extremely safety conscious.
