Comments We retired to Florida a year ago. Because the gulf is shallow, we went across the state to dive the ship wrecks in Key Largo. We have dove ship wrecks in Michigan and were looking forward to some of the bigger ships sunk for recreational diving. We were the only ones using air. Everybody else was Nitrox and/or re-breathers. We had no problem with Horizon Divers and air. They were very accommodating.
First day we went to the Duane. Swam the stern on the first dive and the aft on the second dive. I didn't expect to see an American Flag on the tower and it was so pretty with the currents gently waving it. As I was admiring the flag, a turtle came up and swam around it. Lovely. Some of the divers penetrated the wreck. We don't enjoy that, so it was nice to see their bubbles coming through the deck. The viz wasn't very good. Maybe 30 - 50 feet. Spent the night at a hotel nearby and the next day met again at Horizon Divers to prepare to dive the Spiegel Grove. Same as the day before, we did two dives on this wreck. There is a lot to see. The crane arms are fun to dive around. Again the viz wasn't very good, but it was fine if you didn't get too far from your buddy. These are big ships! Several of the guys in our group had dove them more than once. They are deep dives as well. Horizon Divers were well organized and like I said, they had no problems taking care of their clients needs.
