Comments The Flower Gardens Banks are a 7-hour cruise from Freeport, Texas and have their shallowest depth at about 65 feet.Diving is "iffy"--it can be calm and gorgeous or murky, rough and with a stiff current. We had a current on most of the dives but could use a down line to hang on. Nice visibility, to 50 feet, warm water (82 degrees). Lots of healthy corals at East and West Flower Gardens but always mound or boulder types, not much branching coral. No bleaching! Somebody saw a whale shark from the boat, another saw another shark at a distance but no mantas this trip; plenty of loggerhead sea turtles at surface and below. Abundant cute small fish--sunshinefish, yellowhead jawfish, cleaner gobies, red-lipped blenny, longsnout butterfly, blue goby, cherubfish, etc. Some really big angelfishes at Stetson Bank. Boat has curtained bunks, limited storage for personal stuff below. Bring a hanging toiletry kit. Small flashlight is helpful if you need to go up stairs to use the head at night. Plenty of "stick to your ribs" food. (Send notice in advance if you are a vegan).

UW Photo Comments Boat has dedicated camera table but it can get crowded. You must look out for people who forget and put soda bottles and coffee cups next to your gear! Lots of opportunities for video or distance photography, lots of small stuff. You can get lucky and see big fish.
