Comments This was my third trip to Key Largo, arguably my favorite place to dive to date and I've written about the area in more detail in earlier Chapbooks. As usual: great shallow spur & groove reef diving with tons of schooling fish, good coral, an occasional nurse shark and turtle, and tons of bottom time given the shallow depths.

This time I stayed at a new place: Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort, which proved to be the best yet. Unlike the mediocre chain motels of the area, the Amoray resort is a very pleasant, almost small campus-like place on the side of the Key facing Florida (and the sunset). It is very homey , non-commercial, and lushly planted. The rooms are small apartment duplexes with their own kitchen. It has a pool, a small beach on the waterfront, kayaks, and its own dive operation.

The dive operation was efficient and run by very nice folks. They were very helpful and gave excellent dive briefings. Their only down side was that they imposed one hour dive limits in order to maintain the ability to send boats out twice a day (pretty common of the dive operations there - except Ocean Divers). Because it is on the opposite side of the island as the dive sites, transit time is 20 min or so longer than most of the other operators. However, the trip is very pleasant and goes through some beautiful mangrove forests. In sum, I highly recommend Amoray dive resort as the place to stay in Key Largo - even if you use the other dive operators.
