Diving from a RIB in the Magharee Islands. This is cold water diving, a bit more adventurous than what the Red Sea or Caribbean have to offer. Poor viz, no coral reefs and no wrecks mean working a bit harder to find sealife. Divers should possess strong diving skills, including use of a compass, ability to deal with the occasional fast current and willingness to seek out critters among the rocks, kelp and grass. This is a good place for novice divers to learn, lots of sandy patches to practice drills. Unless requested or on a PADI course, diving here is done with your buddy only, not with a guide. Lots of crabs and lobsters (but leave the many lobster pots alone!). Other fishes: dogfish, pollack and blennies for the most part; conger eels. Dive centre staff are very service-oriented, solid divemaster procedures on the boat; accommodations and meals are good; lots to see during surface interval time. Plenty of pubs and resturants. Waterworld Dive Centre (www.waterworld.ie) is a bit remote; north of Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula. Divers not in the British Isles should fly to Kerry International Airport and hire a car. |
