Comments	Diving the caldera of a 3,500 YO volcanic explosion in the eastern Aegean provides a unique underwater experience. No coral formations, of course, but gigantic tumbles of boulders and volcanic debris host myriad species of bony fish and invertebrates unknown to those of us who usually dive warmer and more casually-built underwater environments. Swim-throughs route into massive caverns where eels and small critters abound and curiously assess human visitors. Our diving here was secondary to more traditional adventures (the late iron-age digs at Akrotiri shouldn't be missed) and rounds of tasting at the local wineries. Santorini Dive Center scheduled us through an internet contact and provided all needed gear and free transportation to and from our hotel. Paul, the owner, proved a gracious and informative host for both diving and cultural planning. English seemed to be the common language. The island's great restaurants offer a super means of off-setting calories expended in dive activities. And, who wants to miss after-dinner Ouzo? Opah!
