Comments The dives in Sipadan were definitely special, I would say it is
at least as good as Palau. We saw large schools of barracuda
and jacks, tons of turtles and sharks.

The problem is when we don't get the permits for Sipadan and have do
Mabul/Kapalai. It's macro diving there, and not
close to being in the same league as Raja Ampat. The reefs were
not healthy; dynamite fishing is active in the area as we heard 2
blasts at close range.

We had booked 8 dive days with Borneo Divers and ended
up diving Sipadan 2 days. We decided to leave 2 days early after finding out we were slated to do Mabul/Kapalai for the 3rd day in a row; there's only so much artificial reefs our group could endure.
We learnt that some single divers got to dive Sipadan 3 days out
of 4, and most of the larger groups 2 days out of a 5 day package.
Had we known in advance we would not have bothered with a
8 day package ... or claim we were all diving as singles :)
I would fault the permit system rather than Borneo Divers though.

The dive operation at Borneo Divers is top notch. No complaints
there. Unfortunately our group will probably not return with the
current permit system.
