Comments This beautiful Ironwood boat is considerably larger than the average liveaboard. The design and size of the boat makes for smooth transit. Guest cabins are roomy with plenty of drawers for storage. A/C worked well. The bathroom / shower are comfortable with plenty of hot water. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand soap are provided. Two large bath towels are provided for each guest. Bed is comfortable but pillows were too big / thick for an average sized woman. Both my husband and I wanted thinner pillows but none were to be had. The food on board is good except for desserts which were bland. Charging of devices is not allowed in guest rooms. There are plenty of charging areas in the boats common spaces.

The dive deck is large with benches on both sides of the boat for divers to gear up. Individual gear containers are provided under the benches. A bucket of water is placed in front of each divers spot for your mask - great idea! A tray with glasses of cold water is brought on deck for divers to sip while listening to the briefing. Divers only need to carry their masks on and off the tenders. The tenders are of a size and design that you can easily backroll into the water without colliding with neighbours. Staff are very accommodating should you want to put your gear on or take it off in the water. Divers are treated to a warm towel and a brief shoulder and neck massage after every dive. A lot of thought has gone into making divers comfortable on this boat and it’s much appreciated.

The diving

The diving was usually very good, fishy with mostly healthy coral. Some of the dives in the North were underwhelming but as we headed south the diving was excellent. We saw mantas on 3 of the dives. We saw plenty of black tip reef sharks, bumphead parrot fish, napoleon wrasse and several large schools of fusiliers. Cuttlefish, mantis shrimp and ornate ghost pipefish were seen on several dives. The diversity and volume of fish was a pleasure to see. We had medium to strong current on several dives.

The not so good

Our dive guide repeatedly used his pointer to poke / move marine life for better viewing. I prefer the respectful hands off approach. One of the divers routinely rested his camera and fins on coral with no correction from his dive guide - disturbing to see beautiful coral get broken.

The cost for nitrox was $240 U.S. per diver - seems pricey. A fuel surcharge was added two months before departure at $330 U.S. per diver. Almost everyone doing multiple dives over several days uses nitrox. The price of fuel isn’t stable. Better to build these costs into the price of the trip then to nickel and dime people after.

Overall, I very much enjoyed the diving in Raja Ampat and all the comforts provided by the fantastic staff on the Dewi.
