Hurricane Relief in the Bahamas

Grand Bahama and the Abacos have been destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. Many of us have enjoyed diving in that region. Now the people need your help. The US coast guard, USAID relief agency and UN relief agencies joined efforts led by the Royal Bahamas Defense Force and the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) of the Bahamas. California Liveaboard Fire -- 34 Feared Perished

During the early hours of September 2, the 75-foot Truth Aquatics liveaboard Conception caught fire while off Santa Cruz Island. US Coastguard reported that 5 members of the crew, who were able to jump into an inflatable from where they were, had been rescued by Good Samaritan boat The Grape Escape. Fire-fighters reached the vessel at approx. 3.30am, but 34 other people on board were already feared dead. Conception is an older vessel where passengers sleep in bunk beds stacked three-high in two shared cabins below decks. They would have been asleep when fire broke out and, with few escape routes, one through the galley, it is presumed they were trapped.

By 7.00 am fire-fighters were still unable to board the vessel because the fire continued to re-flash. US Coastguard captain Monica Rochester described flames 30-feet tall.

Conception had left Santa Barbara on August 31 for a 3-day trip to Southern California’s Channel Islands. It eventually sank 60 feet from shore in 54 feet of water, with a portion of the bow breaking the surface. The Conception had been chartered by Worldwide Diving Adventures, owned by marine biologist and NAUI Instructor Kristy Finstad, who was believed to be among the missing passengers.

As usual, it's filled with honest evaluations, great stories, and an inside look at the diving world. You can read it on your computer or print it out. Just click once (or twice) on the attachment and it will appear before your eyes.*
