Advance Notice to our Faithful Members

Twenty years ago, in our 1998 Travelin’ Diver’s Chapbook, which we provide each December, nearly two-thirds of the destinations our readers reported on were in the Caribbean or Mexico. We carried 12 reviews on Indonesia and one on the Philippines. This year, there are more than 90 Indonesia reports and more than 30 on Philippines destinations. Now, only about one-third are from the Caribbean or Mexico.

It took a while for divers to discover the extraordinary diving available in the Indo/Pacific, but as divers did, resorts got built, liveaboards got launched, and, to paraphrase a quote from The Field of Dreams, “if you build it, they will come.”

Of course, the sad decline of the reefs and fish life in our hemisphere means that one must travel great distances to get to pristine diving, but that’s not to say one cannot spend a lot of pleasant hours underwater on many Caribbean Islands. Yet, the IndoPacific remains the dream destination – an expensive and time-consuming destination – for most divers.

In a few days, you will receive our 2018 Travelin’ Diver’s Chapbook, with hundreds of intriguing and helpful reader reports. Our reports will help any diver select a destination with the best safe diving, the best accommodations, and the best prices. In just this one source, you can have at your fingertips a source of crucial information to help you plan the perfect trip. And, you can supplement that information from years of reports on all these destinations on our website, available only to our members.

I hope you find your dream destination in our 2018 Chapbook and in the first-hand reviews we write. As always, these are unvarnished, tell-it-like-it-is reports, uninfluenced by advertising dollars.

PS: Just a reminder that you can generate your own collection of reports at any time using our Mini Chapbook tool.

You can quickly create a collection of all our reader reports dealing with Fiji, for example, by going to https://www.undercurrent.org/members/UCnow/MiniCBkForm.php (linked from the RR page and in the navigation bar for subscribers) where you can specify only resorts, or liveaboards, reports for, say, the past 4 years, and or even restrict to those about certain areas (e.g. Kadavu, Bligh Waters, ...) You can view it as an html online or generate a PDF to download or print out.
