1998 Chapbook
  Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has always been a way point to other dive destination in the Caribbean, but as some dive tourism infrastruture develops more divers are stopping to sample the reefs. Night life is abundant, crime is somewhat of a problem . . .

Caribbean Divers Institute, Fajardo, May 1996, Kelly Hayes-Raitt, Santa Monica, CA. "Great sites in Culebra and St. Thomas. Turtles, nurse shark, lobster, barracuda, etc., etc. Trip so poorly planned, the owner was unable to fill tanks at remote island Culebra's closed-for-the -holidays only dive shop."

Paraguera Divers/Parador Parlmar Hotel, December 1996, Mary Burry, Portland, OR. "Vis 80 to 100 feet. As good as any place in Caribbean. But no one is there!! Effra and his wife were great! They handled all gear. Knew were to go and were friendly and helpful. 48 people on the boat; comfortable only two dives a day as t no good shallow dives available. Puerto Rico was very friendly and safe. Cost reasonable and diving convenient. Boat at front door!"

Parguera Divers/La Posada Porlamar, April 1997, Bill & Jayne Goocher, Hermosa Beach, CA. "La Posada Porlamar is on the SW coast of PR. State run, very clean, very friendly. Small (16 room) like a B&B. Parguera Divers is a great operation. Not for the inexperienced; small groups (boat holds 10 max.) Safety and conservation conscious, good emergency equipment etc. Twentyone mile wall leaves lots to dive. Corals and sponges equal Cozumel. Not many fish. Every first dive of the day is a wall, second a nice reef top. Once they see your log book and verify experience, you can dive your own profile."
