Dive Kiribati/Captain Cook Hotel, February 1995, George Stateham. "Christmas Island one of the least developed locations you will ever dive. Does have electricity, running water and a paved road. Long been a prized bone fishing location. Kim Anderson has exclusive license for diving in exchange for setting up a recompression chamber. Coral and fish typical for Indo-Pacific, abundant and varied. Saw sharks on three dives, one a large hammerhead; mantas every day. If there Robinson Crusoe mixed in with your Jacques Cousteau, then it is excellent ." Dive Kiribati/Captain Cook Hotel, July 1995, Joe Nissim, Boulder, CO. "Diving at Christmas Island very enjoyable. Pristine sites, rich and varied fish. Fun night diving; large and bizarrely decorated crabs. Whitetip sharks at several sites. Snorkeled with mantas and dolphins on surface intervals. Excellent outrigger dive boat. Professional and flexible dive operation; friendly and enthusiastic staff. One site offered superb hard coral. Air and water in 80's, vis 80100 ft. . . . Hotel has necessary amenities; good food, native dancing and singing. Pretty island with friendly locals. Seabird nesting sites fascinating." Dive Kiribati/Captain Cook Hotel, August 1995, Mark Davis, Santa Ana, CA. "Expected more sharks however diving very good. Mantas everywhere; huge schools of dolphins (200300) every day. When we weren't diving (averaged 3 dives a day) we were snorkeling w/mantas or dolphins, sometimes being towed through the water by the outrigger to check the dolphins out. Vis: 40 ft to 100 ft. Varying underwater topography; some drift diving, lots of coral, tons of smaller fish. Wife and I only divers; dive operators great! Kim Anderson is owner, Russell Bowman divemaster. Professional (they have a chamber), friendly and accommodating. We did what we wanted with no hassles." Copyright 1997 by DSDL, Inc., publishers of Undercurrent. All rights reserved.
