Negril Beach Club/ Negril Scuba Center, July 1996, Roger Chair, New York, NY. "Quick to get to, cheap for a long weekend. Clear blue water 100'vis, water: 80°84°. All dives guided. Colorful corals and sponges, lots of bald spots choked with algae. Fish bigger than 6" have been caught; saw a frightened turtle and eagle ray - conservation efforts are improving. Arrow crabs everywhere, small shrimp and crabs. Dive shop/hotel clean, comfortable, inexpensive beachfront hotel. Shop owner Karen has been in Negril for 17 years; did everything she could, scheduled extra dives." Mariner's Inn, August 1996, Edward Lawson, Dayton, OH. "Ideal shore diving off Limestone Shore. vis: 4050 ft. water: 80°. Excellent assortment of reef fish, however fish were small; continued fishing even in Marine Sanctuary. Coral not in good condition. Much algae. 8' nurse shark. Jamaican Association of Dive Operator requirement for diving even this easy site only with a paid divemaster is frustrating. The staff at Mariner's Inn was good to us." Poseidon Divers, 1995, Steve Neal Fairfield, TX. "$20 rt cab ride from cruise ship dock. Theo Smit and Hannie Smit wrote 1996 book on Jamaica Diving. 85' for 37 min; magnificent wall, pinnacles, black coral, vase sponges, lobster, mackerel, garden eels. Chimney: go up and come out the top of wall." Swept Away, June 1995, Robert Lyons, Tuscaloosa, AL. "Free resort course; separate trips for resort course people. Certified divers: free one tank trips twice a day. All equipment provided and set up. Dives 4595 feet. Reef in excellent condition, with a wide variety of coral, sponges & tropicals, mostly juveniles. Diving either anchored or drift, depending on the current. Several airplane wrecks. Dive staff excellent. Briefings clear, concise. Night dives for an extra charge. Better than St. Croix or Aruba, even the Florida Keys. Tipping is expected." Swept Away, June 1996, Clyde Brannen, Jefferson, GA. "Patient and friendly with beginners. Good quality gear, dive boats generally uncrowded, comfortable. Vis: 5070 ft. water: 82°84°. Depth and time rigidly controlled. Plenty of activities for nondivers. Even cheap rooms comfortable with plenty of privacy. Early dive 9:00 a.m. . . . Computer diving not allowed. No place to store personal gear. Had to carry back and forth to room each day. No rinse tanks, beach shower only for rinsing gear. Afternoon rain cancelled most afternoon dives. Certified divers dived with resort divers in late morning/noon dive." Copyright 1997 by DSDL, Inc.Publishers of Undercurrent. All rights reserved.
