Inzan Tiger, April 1995, Leona Holaday, Honolulu, HI. "Food and accommodations good. No adequate dive platform. Entries and exits difficult due to seas and design of boat. Boat limited to 4 divers. Weather and diving conditions on Malpelo Island was terrible, consistently poor vis (5060 feet, Water Temp: 5060) strong currents, rough water. No one to guide us underwater (the standard directions were "always keep the 'rock', meaning island, to the left . . . unless there is a strong current, then keep the 'rock' to your right!") When we surfaced the boat was frequently a far distance away with no chase boat to pick us up in the rough waters. . . . Captain frequently went hunting with his speargun at the same time and place we were diving. The gun was an explosive one which detonated underwater and sacred not only us divers, but the fish as well! Another boat with approximately 23 divers in the area had rescue Zodiacs in the water.
