Kungkungan Bay, August, 1995. "Larry Smith is divemaster one of the best in the business. Does detailed dive briefs and knows dive locations perfectly. Lembeh Straits has coral gardens, rocks and two wrecks. 78 to 80 degrees, 1025 feet, rainy and cloudy. Both hotel and dive staff take personal interest in guests and background. Larry Smith provides lowkey advice to improve skills. . . . Food and accommodations are expensive but firstrate." Allen Kepchar, Washington, DC

Maulana, Dew Awi, Bandanaira, September, 1994. "One of the best in Indonesia. The corals, hard and soft, are pristine and fish are abundant. Not fished out. Easy to get a boat to various islands. Bandanaira is a congenial small town - no bank, bring rupiahs. Des Awi's hotels are comfortable, right on the waterfront. If one is a diver, one must stay with him. There are several other hotels and homestays in town. Several restaurants in town serve the usual Indonesian fare." Carol and Art Murray, La Jolla, CA

Nusantara Dive Center, August, 1995. "Divemasters were ill trained, did not control dives well. Some pointed out rare animals, especially nudibranchs. On one dive a German went to 40 meters without permission. Dive brief was 'it's a wall and follow the current.' Some rental equipment in poor shape. However, Bunaken Park is fantastic place to dive. Shore dives not possible. Water 7884 degrees, 1540 foot visibility. Rooms were marginal." Allen Kepchar, Washington, DC

Senggigi Beach Hotel, October, 1994. "Senggigi: good coral heads offshore to the main reef. Although this area is fished, there are a variety of tropicals. Water can be clear depending on the tide. The Gilis: Trawangan is easy to get to by boat from Senggigi - many different boatmen, water clear, many varieties of fish on the corals and in the dropoff. One can make this a day trip or stay over at one of the many homestays - not the luxury hoteltypes. Several dive operators on the island." Carol and Art Murray, La Jolla, CA
