Comments We decided to do something a little special for Xmas this year, and boy did we hit the jackpot! The adventure begins with your flight from LAX to Fiji, a 10 hour flight. This is an over night flight, so be sure to get an outside seat if possible, so you don't get stuck in the middle seats. Upon arriving in Fiji, 5am, we immediately got on another flight to Taveuni. (1 1/2 flight) A van picks you up at the airport and off you go to a beach to be picked up by a boat from the island.
Now the adventure really starts, the boat ride is very enjoyable. When you get to the island, you are greeted by the staff with song and drink. It is so incredibly beautiful, that no place else will compare. The huts are 5 star all the way, so don't worry about the accommodations. The outside shower is fun and a kooky thing to enjoy so I would definitely book a hut with one.
Everyday they will do your laundry, so pack lite. Robes are in the room to use, so maybe leave your pj's home.
Eating: They beat on a log to tell you when it is time to eat, so relax and slow down, your on island time now. The food is tasty and diverse, many choices to pick from each day. Deserts were wonderful and each person order something different and share.
Diving: We had such a fun time diving with the resorts dive crew, fun and exciting. They are in tune to the level you are at and will help you if you need it. We did a 10 day live aboard after our stay at Matangi and honestly, the diving from the island was far superior. Live and learn! They know where the best places are to dive and when the coral is open as well as the currents. Important in Fiji, trust me.
Other stuff: You can do day trips from the island, we did not but many couples did and talked highly of them. We did some sea kayaking, what a work out. Looking back, we should have stayed two weeks and skipped the live aboard, there is always next year.
