Comments 3rd stay at Matagi and it is excellant. For the price and its remoteness this is a 1st class oepration and we will continue to go back there. The food was always excellant and the staff is very attentive to your needs. They offered to upgrade us to one of the delux bures but we declined. Although #1 used to be the oldest it was recently refinished and we enjoyed the extra room this bure provides. The dive operation is still run by Carol & Nigle Douglas and the jet boat is an excellant dive platform. Fish life is still abudant in this area as well as big fish. We got in the water with a large school of pilot whales and dolpins on one dive, it was great! Went and explored several new sites this trip as well as the usual ones. Warming waters and algea are also having a negative effect here as most of reef tops are brown or covered with algea. Did the day trip to Somasoma Straight, hit the Great White wall at full tide, what a ride! Shore diving is improving each year, more and more of the reef off the resort is coming back to life and lots of fish here. Night dives are excellant. Dive operation had new instructor/diveguide who was really unfamiliar with a lot of the divesites, we had to tell him what some of the dives were we wanted to do and get the native crew to show him where they were. 1st 3 days we were there, the wind was up and was really rough, several divers got seasick, the rest of the time we were there it was mostly calm. The trip to the local village is a real eye opener and if you plan on going to Matagi, take some boxes of pencils/crayons & tablets with you. It is really appreciated by the children in the school as well as sporting equipment, i.e. soccer balls, basketballs etc.
