1999 Chapbook
  Australia

Perth Diving Academy, May 1997, John Grimwood, M.D., San Diego, CA. Day trip to Rottnest Island, hour by boat from Fremantle, on Australia's Southwest Coast. Did one dive in A.M. then lunch on the island, 1 afternoon dive, Water 73 degrees F, vis: 30 feet. Interesting diving, with mix of temperate and tropical species. Dove on shallow limestone reef, honeycombed with caves and fissures large enough to hold a diver. Max depth 50 feet on 1st dive, 30 ft on 2nd. Caves filled with glassy sweepers, with encrusting sponges covering the walls. Topside, the limestone was covered with kelp, with occasional small growth of hard coral. Many stingrays, a few small (2 ft) bamboo sharks, unusual tropical fish (orange filefish, old wives, cardinal fish) numerous spiny lobsters, and one curious cuttlefish that changed color as I watched. Dive operation well run and organized; handled our large group with ease. Rental gear in excellent condition (including computers). 5mm farmer john with jacket was more than adequate. $55 (Aus) for 2 dives, gear rental, and lunch (Group rate). Not the Great Barrier Reef, but worthwhile.
