areas in caribbean not cleaned out by Lionfish
« on: June 25, 2011, 23:56:37 UTC »
I am looking for recommendations on areas to dive that have not been cleaned out by LION FISH
I was just in Grand Turk and it seemed to have been pretty well cleaned out

Any recommendations?

Hi seahorse,

Dominica and Tobago are still looking very good.

guess the main question is what you mean by cleaned out.  cozumel has lf but within the park the population seems to be undercontrol.  I have not seen any real change in the species you see day to day.  I have a feeling this applies to other parts of the caribbean as well.

St Thomas in March 2011 did 8 dives in two days and saw one lion fish.  Lot's of reef fish and the diving was better than I thought it would be.   Check out Blue Island Divers.  Will dive there again and with Blue Island
Roatan June 2011 6 days of 2 tank dives saw some Lion fish.   Lots of reef fish was great diving.  Coconut Divers West End.   Again Great dives and a great shop
Dove the Bahamas in March 2010 and November 2010 - Bad lots of Lion fish and not much n the way of reef fish dove Nassau and Grand both had lots of the Lion fish.
Diving since 2003 sites visited Aruda, Bonaire, Curacao, Bahamas, Belize, Grand Cayman (8 times), Provo, Grand Turk, Jamaica, Roatan, St Thomas, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Florida Keys,  Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum (Cenotes and Ocean) - like small dive groups and quiet resorts

Was in Little Cayman - Pirate's Point - earlier this year.  There are lionfish but the instructors are extremely active in going after them.  The area doesn't seem to have been "little-fished" out yet like some other places.

Was glad to hear a dive course is now being offered to the general public on how to catch them.  I hope they are careful about the manner in which they are caught so as not to disperse eggs from pregnant females into the water.

BTW, Pirate's Point makes outstanding sushi from the lionfish.

It makes for great ceviche, too.
