Heads-up, divers!  Sunset Divers ceased operations Saturday July 18, 2009; Sunset Waters probably closing, did not honor reservations in the last week.

One of my favorite dive operators, Sunset Divers, has closed due to lack of
payment from the resort over four months.  An e-mail sent to a large list of people by Lynn Bean on Saturday July 18, 2009 confirmed their closing that same day.  I have not yet heard if, where and when Sunset Divers will reopen.

An e-mail to Sunset Waters manager in the US (Frank Cihak) was returned with an auto-reply that he "no longer represents" the resort.  The US reservations manager, Cory Acosts, replied:

"Sunset Waters has not been able to honor last wks reservations …….it
is just a matter of time before we may be closing our doors …….

Until everything is resolved , we will probably close …………Pls make other
travel arrangements.

I am also waiting for further information from our corporate offices……………"

and listed names, e-mails and phones for the managing partners and the
senior accountant.

The websites for Sunset Divers and Sunset Waters have not, as of July 20,
2009, been updated to indicate any of the recent events.  Divers beware!

I got an e-mail from Cory Waters about this on July 21.

Can anyone suggest a comparable hotel?

For those looking for other accommodations, you might try Habitat Dive Resort.

They are the exclusive representative for Habitat Resort and Easy Divers in Rif Sint Marie. I know they have already assisted with about a dozen different groups with rooms and dive packages from this fiasco.

Wow!!! A group of 24 of us recently returned from Sunset Waters.

We arrived on June 21st and had a great week of fun at Sunset Waters and great week diving with Lynn Bean at Sunset Divers.

Thank god they did not close before our trip was completed!!! What a disaster that would have been.  I was the Trip Leader and would have been in a HUGE mess!!

We had large rooms and 3 meals daily and all the bar drinks and beer we could consume.

Looking back, the resort would have been empty if not for our group!!

Lynn at Sunset Divers was professional and accommodating.  I am sure that she and her staff will do well.

Lynn recently sent me her new email adddress....now I know why.

Consider yourself very lucky.  Many people got burned.

I am sure someone will buy up that property and turn it around into something absolutely fabulous.  It is the perfect location ... prime property.

That area could use a really updated resort.

I just want to put down a note to tell the other side of this story.
Just to put it into perspective.

Sunset Divers itself has failed to pay taxes for almost 5 years.
So, it is not only the hotel's fault. The service to the customers was very good, but management and then specially people management was not Lynn's best quality. A lot of people have left the diveshop over the years because of her inability to communicate with her staff.
There were a lot of people working in the diveshop without the proper papers.

Both Lynn and Dave (assistant manager) were working on the island of Curacao without permits for years as well. What kind of message are you sending to your (local) staff by allowing this ?

This is for all the diveshop owners that do not care about regulations and their staff... Be carefull, this may happen to you as well

A lot of people have left the diveshop over the years because of her inability to communicate with her staff.]

I was a group leader for a trip there several years back and found Lynn's
communication skills to leave a lot to be desired.

Also, ownership issues have been in a mess for at least 5 years now.
