Diving in late June with 2 teenagers who dove G.C last summer for 1st time open water dives.  We have dived G.C. many times; keys, bahamas, st. lucia. Want gorgeous beach for walking and swimming when not diving, great accomodations, and terrific, easy diving- as always supplied by G.C.   ( by the way, Neptune Divers- fantastic- personalized diving!). Bonaire and that area of caribbean impossible to get to from here within time frame.  Any recommendations?  Return to G.C. or will other destinations satisfy in late June with above desires ( we get 1 big vacation/yr. to dive- want to make the most and best of it). Provo too costly and long travel to dive sites? Cozumel no beaches? Can't get a feel for each. :-\
Appreciate the advice. Thank you!

Certainly the diving in CG is very good but I really enjoy LC and Brac.  BUT, have not heard how the October hurricane effected the diving in LC or Brac.  Divers were accessing LC by Dec but no sure of Brac.

Our dive master in Brac did not like the people at T & C, he worked there for several years, but I will probably book a trip there sometime.

Cozumel is busy all the time.  Lots of divers on the sights esp in June.

Try Curracao.

Little Cayman is back n running with little reef damage according to reports.

Ever think about Ambergris Caye, Belize?
If you go try diving with Chuck & Robbie, a great small dive operation.
You could also do a day trip to the Blue Hole...

Hopefully you'll be early enough to avoid the hurricanes that we were dodging
on our trip to Caymans last year.  We thought early July would be a pretty good
shot but would go earlier if we did it again...May is nice at any of those destinations.

Think about Grand Turk.  Beautiful beaches and the trips to the dives sites are 15-20 minutes.  We always stay at the Manta House.  The "Jungle Room" is plenty big enough for three or four people and is currently posted at around $900/week.  If you go there, be sure to dive with Smitty (Algrove Smith), the best dive guide we have had in over 200 vacation dives.  The girls at Manta House can direct you to him.

If you investigate this, tell Manta House that Bob & Margie Speir from Virginia sent you.

We have been to Grand Cayman, Grand Turk , Curacao, and just returned from Cozumel last week.  All these destinations are top dive destinations in my opinion.  I concur with Dennis 49 for Ambergris Caye, especially if you desire family-safe enviornment, with absolutely great diving.  We stayed at Ramon's, a solid standard for the island, with beaches, pool, great diving operation, and convenient to the island fare.   Grand turk (Speir) is also exceptional for a dive vacation, and definitely look up Smitty for your dive operation.
Curacao has the most to offer if you spend time above the ocean, or have concerns for Hurricane season.   Many nice resorts outside of the capital city, ( we stayed with Habitat and Easy Divers,   exceptional !),  But you may want to rent a car for a few days there.
Cozumel's diving was still the greatest, but the island is now a tourist destination, ruled by the days the cruise ships are in port.  Beaches are hard to come by without the big all -inclusive, but the El Cozumeleno is still there, with expansion and improvements. I think you can get direct flights to all the destinations I've listed, but Curacao may need a stop in Aruba.
Good luck planning your trip.   Airhead 52

Just returned from Little Cayman Beach Resort last week (our second visit in three years) and loved it.  The resort has been completely refurbished after the hurricane - the accomodations reminded my wife of a Hyatt, not a dive resort, and the food was amazing.  There is also a very high quality dive operation and even on the wall dives you have the option of sticking to the top of the reef in 30 to 60 feet, if your new divers need more experience.

I suggest the three meal a day package.  There are few off-site options for food.

Cayman Brac is still not back in full operation, and Cayman Brac Reef Resort will not be operational for some time (but the bar and restaurant are open).

Mango9:
Thanks for your post!  Just what I was looking for.  We have been to LCBR twice before but have no news about damage from Ike and Gustav.  Glad to hear resort is OK and even upgraded (it was never exactly posh!).
Two questions: how are the reefs?  Any damage?
And, what procedure has the dive operation put in place to avoid the tragedy that occurred there a couple of years ago when they wenty off and left two divers and both died (I think it might even have been two different insytance).

LCBR is a great resort.  I have taken groups there several times and was looking into bringing another group there this summer.... but they were booked.  They may have individual rooms available though.,

Right now I am getting pricing for a small group trip to Dominica and you are more than welcome to come with us.

Just returned from LCBR.  Great week of diving!  Lobsters everywhere & turtles.  A few sharks.  Southern sting rays.  Many groupers.  LCBR remodeling has improved the place a lot.  Food was excellent.  Dive operation top notch.  They take good care of you.  We will return.

Actually... just booked a group trip to Dominica yesterday and only have 4 openings left already!!

Staying at Castle Comfort Lodge from 6/21-28.
Cost $995 which includes 7 nites in a standard room, breakfast daily, 5 days of 2 tank boat dives, unlimited shore diving, transfers and taxes.

Deposit $100 due by Jan. 15th and balance due by March 25.

Depending on where you want to fly out of... you fly into San Juan (usually have to overnight both coming and going) and then take America Eagle to Dominica.

Several people in the group are flying out of Dallas and it costs around $800 +/-

Can't make this trip, however.  Have heard good things about Dominica.  Maybe next time

Was just on the Brac in November for two weeks - - all reefs (North & South) are doing fine (no damage); both dive Ops running based on tourists (a whopping 14 of us on-island on one day).  Only real problem is a shortage of mooring buoys, since the Government tends to live hand-to-mouth on their financing based on diving...there's a good 30% of them missing.

Locals report that Paloma (11/08) was all wind & rain - - no storm surge.  The rains this year have allowed a lot of the foliage to leaf out and regrow:  visitors will have a fairly hard time discerning that there was a hurricane, until they see all of the houses with fresh paint & new windows/doors.

For accommodations, several of the private homes are available, as is also the "Breakers" condo.  The new "Alexander" Hotel is open and the Brac Reef Beach Resort - working hard to reopen, being that Paloma put a tornado through them - reopened shortly after we returned, during the first week of December 09.
