Fogged-up Mask?  April 15, 2016

New masks have deposit of silicone vapor that occurs during the manufacturing process on which humidity precipitates. You can remove this silicone by rubbing the inside of the glass with good old-fashioned white toothpaste. A long-time contributor describes getting the same result using the flame of a lighter lick the glass. Take care not to overheat the glass or damage the mask’s skirt. The full story on using flame was in the April 2016 issue of Undercurrent.

Gold Fever  April 15, 2016

Built in the same yard as the Titanic for the White Star Line, the RMS Republic, loaded with wealthy passengers bound for the Mediterranean, was lost off Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, on January 23, 1909, after being hit by an Italian steamship, which had lost its way in dense fog. Only six people died, but the cargo included 150,000 US ‘double eagle’ gold coins, worth more than $1 billion in today’s market. Now, salvage rights to the ship, resting at 270 feet, have been secured, and New Yorker Martin Bayerle is convinced he’ll pull off the world’s largest-ever treasure recovery.

Setting ‘Deep Stops’ on your diving computer?  April 15, 2016

After Richard Pyle, the deep diving ichthyologist first proposed the idea, ‘deep stops’ had become enshrined in advanced diving routines. Simon Mitchell, professor of anesthesiology and deep diver has been turning this thinking on its head. You can read why you might do better not making ‘deep stops’ in a free story at www.undercurrent.org.

Want to Dive Cuba?  April 15, 2016

For Americans, Cuba is the next hot Caribbean dive destination. While some American divers have sampled its reefs, divers from other countries have travelled freely there for decades. Americans officially can't go as leisure travellers, but if you want to dive there, you can do it with virtually no risk of financial penalty and certainly no risk of jail time… You can read the rest in a free story at www.undercurrent.org

Flying Squads of Squid  April 15, 2016

Researchers in Japan have observed whole schools of neon squid taking to the air to escape predators. They shoot themselves out of the water propelled by a powerful squirt from their siphons and spread their fins wing-like to glide. They can stay airborne for around three seconds. It has long been rumored but there was never any scientific proof before. They spread their fins to the front and their webbed tentacles to the rear, emulating the shape of an airplane, folding back into a sleek torpedo shape as they re-enter the water.

What’s Better? DIN or A-clamp?  April 15, 2016

When buying a regulator you might find yourself faced with that choice. People have definite views. You’ll find them among our Diving Insider’s Blogs at www.undercurrent.org.
