Comments Tulamben is not a party place, and the beaches are not very attractive. There are plenty of accommodations catering primarily to divers, as well as several dive operators. Many dives were from shore. Our group had a dedicated divemaster at our beckon call for the 10 days we stayed there. Cadek is professional and tolerant, and we all liked him alot. He mainly pointed out only things unique to the area, some quite tiny(sea horses, pipefish, shrimp, crabs nudibranchs.)He helped my wife in and out of the water. He seemed to get a feel for my air consumption rate and after a few dives he would time the dive to where we headed for shore at about the time I was at 50 bars without having to communicate.
The visibility was usually about 20 meters. The sky was overcast or raining during most of our dives. Despite this, we were dazzled by the color and diversity of the underwater life there. This was our first time to Indonesia. I recognized many of the fish from Hawaii, although colors were different. The hard coral is lacking, but there is alot of soft coral, sponges, etc. which provides a considerable array of amazing shapes and colors. The Wreck of USS Liberty is a 200m walk from the dive shop and 150 m from shore. We dove it twice in the first few days. It is the only night dive TWD offers, but it is fantastic! We dove it almost every night we stayed there; I probably dove it 7 times. The wreck is from WWII, and is well covered by growth, and lots of fish, etc. Night diving is a great choice when there is cloud cover and limited visibility.
Tulamben Wreck Divers arranged our tours and transportation from the airport 2 hr. away. We went to Amed one day and did 2 dives there. The visibility was slightly better. The dives were quite good, and the beach is much nicer than at Tulamben.
Several of our dives were at artificial reefs which sometimes seemed like a junk yard, but some things seemed to work very well to grow stuff and attract fish, etc.
This area like all the places we dove at Bali, was quite crowded with divers, especially the wreck. I was rarely annoyed however, although especially at night it was a challenge to stay with our group.
