Anthony's Key Resort is a lovely place, well run, with a fleet of first
class dive boats. Most of the dive sites are just a few minutes from the
resort. Underwater, it was very disappointing. At all the dive sites we
visited, the reef was about 90-95% covered with algae, with scarcely any
live hard coral in place. Fish were very scarce everywhere. On the
positive side, soft coral was abundant, as were sponges, large and diverse.
The geological aspects of the diving are quite interesting; the wall is
near the shore, often begins at relatively shallow depths (like 30-40
feet), and is cleaved by lots of canyons, but the live coral and fish in
the canyons were as scarce as at more level sites. The divemaster led us
to the occasional sea horse and big grouper, which were fun to see, but on
our way to these set pieces, there was relatively little to see. Very
disappointing overall. This reef needs help.
