First visit since Wilma hit Cozumel in Fall 2005. Have been going to
Cozumel every yeaqr since 1999. Wall dives didn't show much impact,
although the Cathedral in Devil's Throat said to be swept away. Biggest
disappointments were the second tank drift dives along the top of the
walls. They all looked like an underwater snow storm had dropped a couple
of inches of "snow" (sand) on them. 90% of the corals and
sponges, etc., were gone or totally covered with sand on these second
dives. Looks like it will take a lifetime to recover to its previous
healthy state. If you're willing to accept a very desolate second dive for
a still very nice initial wall dive go for it. I took a day to go over to
Playa del Carmen to dive the cenotes with Yucatek Divers. Second time I
dove the cenotes with them (first time in 2004). Very safe and accomodating
operation. Cenotes are like "diving in air' with virtually unlimited
vis and dramatic cave geography. Highly recommended as a change of pace to
the drift diving on Cozumel and easy to do as a day trip with the ferry
system in place. Coral Princess Hotel a first class operation from
"soup to nuts". If you dive with Pepe's try to get Abdiaz as your
guide, he's the "best of the best".
