I’ve been diving Cozumel for 15+ years and I’ve experience the good, the
bad, and the truly awful. This is my second year of diving with Aldora
Divers and I’ll stick with them. The reason I switched is because the best
(in my opinion) dive master on Cozumel went to work for Aldora. Memo, the
owner of Aldora, keeps his eyes open and hires the best DMs he can find and
he more or less has a ‘one strike and you’re out’ rule for bad DMs.

Aldora has mostly small boats and unless it is really busy you’ll only be
with four or five other divers. They also have a big, 42 foot, boat for the
days when the Harbor Master won’t allow small boats out. But even on the
big boat your dive party will be no bigger than four of five divers and
have your own DM.

I know that all this is just a matter of opinion and we all have that, but
I have been with a lot of operations on Cozumel over the years and Aldora
is the one which I’d use to judge everyone else.

BTW, I dove about twice a week for two months this year and saw some big
sharks other than nurse sharks. One was a big Black Tip and the other we
debated about. In the end we decided that it was ether a Bull Shark or a
Caribbean Reef Shark. Both were around the 12 foot size and we saw them on
Columbia Deep, which is my personal favorite dive site. This is the only
the second time in 15 years I’ve seen sharks other than nurse sharks. The
other time was a huge Hammer Head who came and looked at us on our safety
stop!
