Comments A hurricane in August damaged the reef and stirred visibility up somewhat so the conditions were not great. However, the numerous encounters with reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, and turtles made up for it. Not as many reef fish as I remember from my first trip 16 years ago and too many Lion Fish on each dive.
Due to prevailing conditions we didn't get to dive the 'good side' often, but when we did the visibility increased and so did the encounters with sharks and eagle rays. However, I did see broken barrel sponges, sea fans on their sides, and some areas sprinkled by sand on a few dives.
The Blue Hole hasn't changed. It's blue. It's a hole. I dove it anyway and enjoyed every minute. We only spent an hour on the Booby Bird Caye (after Blue Hole dive) due to hurricane damage and ongoing treatment for rodents.
The Sundancer II (soon to be Belize Aggressor IV) is a great boat with plenty of room. The boat has twin beds instead of bunk beds, large windows, and lots of room inside and outside to relax. Several of the rooms had issues with air conditioning but the crew worked to resolve those problems. The food was good and plentiful with great snacks between dives. The entire crew was friendly, helpful, and competent.
The dive deck was great, with hot showers, camera tables, and rinse tanks on each side. Nitrox was consistent with 32%-33% for the week. Warm towels after each dive and hot toddies after night dives capped it off.
The pier that the boat ties too in Belize was damaged during the recent hurricane. The only thing left is the pilings, so we were loaded onto another boat to embark and disembark the boat. There were no side trips available on the last Friday due to the logistics of leaving the boat. We were told it might take two years for the pier to be repaired.
I'd recommend this trip for anyone who hasn't been before.
