In a one-in-a-million example of bad luck, a 16-year-old girl jumped from the liveaboard MV Keana at Maamigili in Ari Atoll on September 19 -- and collided with a needlefish (also called a garfish). She was seriously injured when its needle tip snout penetrated her neck and brain. The dive guide who jumped into the water simultaneously was stabbed by another. Needle fish tend to cruise in schools close to the surface, and this accident suggests a unique hazard divers need to keep in mind. |
