Ed Leibowitz
ST Eustatius had nice diving sites. Unfortunately when I was there, algae
were blooming which sufficiently cut down visibility to 25-75 feet. On
some of the dives(very few) there were strong currents. Rudy and Rinda
Hees, operators of Dive Statia, along with Caroline and Nick were very
accommodating and run an excellent diving operarion. They permitted me to
dive in the morning and afternoon. Other diving resorts where I've been
offer a two dive package in the morning and charge you for an extra dive
for the afternoon dive, even if you only do two dives per day. In one
case, I got caught in a strong surface current and could not swim back to
the boat after surfacing from a dive. Nick kept his eye on me and pulled
me in with a rope. They all bent over backwards to provide assistance to
the scuba diver. I particularly enjoyed diving the wrecks on ST-NE-PA. I
dove it during the day but it would be an excellent night dive. Saw some
big fish, neat coral formations and a lot of small critters. The night
dive was exceptionally good. I dove Nitrox and the cost per tank was $8
extra which I consider reasonable.
I enjoyed eating at Sonny's Chinese restaurant within walking
distance of the Gin House. The food was exceptionally good and I highly
recommend it. It is best to make lodging reservations through Dive Statia
as they obtain lodging discounts for divers. I saved $45 per night at the
Gin House through Dive Statia. Regular rate for my room was $125. Dive
Statia rate was $80. Room at the Gin House was spacious with excellent
Cable TV. I felt that the Gin House breakfast, included in room rate could
have been better.I would definitely consider returning to St Eustatius ,
diving with Dive Statia and staying at the Gin House.
