GRAND TURK www.turksandcaicostourism.com Not the place for 5-star dining, shopping and a concierge. But if you’re serious about diving, relaxation, and more diving, it’s worth every bit of the extra effort it takes to get to this location (our group of 7 will return.) Every one of the islanders will give you a “Hello” and a friendly smile. It’s a good place for a lazy American, -- they use the U.S. dollar, they speak English and they want you to enjoy your experience so you’ll come back to their island. The island has a lot of charm. THE TURKS HEAD HOTEL www.tophotel@grand-turk.com If you want island flavor, stay at the Turks Head, if you want a U.S. motel, go elsewhere. The Turks Head is an old government building that’s been converted into a residence. The court yard is one of its greatest assets. Sitting there under the trees for breakfast, lunch or dinner is truly a relaxing and memorable experience. Service is truly “island-ease”. Food and drinks will be served when their ready, -- not necessarily when everyone else’s is ready. And the ladies who serve you will take their time to enjoy a laugh or carry on a conversation with you. Special BBQ dinners seem to be a big deal and numerous restaurants have them on different nights. They were always fun and with plenty to eat. There are numerous places to eat within a block of the Turks Head, and our group enjoyed all of them at various times and for various reasons. OASIS DIVERS www.oasisdiv.tciway.tc “SIMPLY THE BEST” – why would you want to go anyplace else? Dale and Everett love what they do and it shows in each of the people who work for them and the services they provide. Dale made all of the arrangements for our group on the island including the local airline connection from Provos. She made sure there was someone at the airport that was looking specifically for members of our group by name, that arrived at various times. They got all luggage, equipment and diver to our hotel. Dale personally brought some luggage that the airline sent on a later flight that evening. Everett captained the dive boat we dove on that week, and the things that he doesn’t know about the humpback whale or any of the Grand Turk dive sites, hasn’t been discovered. We always had a good understanding of the site before we entered the water. From the first day to the last, we handled only our fins and mask, the rest was brought to us when we sat on the back of the boat ready to slip into it and jump in. Everett’s love of the humpback can sometimes turn into an hour chase rather than tying to a dive buoy. He got us up close to a mother and calf, -- a sight seldom seen by a boatload of divers. And then, we went back to the dive buoy for our planned dive. Oasis also offered an afternoon of conch diving and a trip to a sandy beach on a nearby island, where the conch was prepared into conch salad to be eaten with BBQ’d burgers and hot dogs. Again, the knowledge of the staff and willingness to share it was greatly appreciated. And if working together all day wasn’t enough, one evening found Everett and members of his staff jam’in with a local musician at one of the BBQ dinners. Oasis Divers is a family affair, and it truly shows in the love and joy they put into every phase of our diving experience in Grand Turk. DIVING Grand Turk offers some very memorable wall diving. All dive sites were within 20 minutes of Oasis. The walls varied in the types and quantities of corals and they varied from gradual decents to shear 90-degree drops. There were several tunnels and swim throughs, which offered magnificent photo shots. We saw memorable views of large schools of fish and also a great variety of fish. Although we did not see many large critters, we heard of others who had. The water temp was a constant 78 in early February and the visibility varied from 80 to well over 100 feet. Most dive profiles were to drop to 80 to 100 feet and work our way back to the top of the wall @ 40 to 50 feet. Our dives were not restricted by time or air, but by our safety and our enjoyment. CONCLUSION Our group is looking forward to the day we repeat this dive trip. We would highly recommend to any diver that you copy our agenda. |
