This is a small island with a volcano and about 5,000 population. I didn't
even think about looking for specialized developing. I just brought my
film back home and had it developed at the dive shop.

Montserrat is an Eastern Caribbean island with an active volcano on the
southern end. There is one dive shop run by a German ex-pat named Wolf
Krebs. He has all equipment for rent and it is in pretty good shape. I
brought my own regulator/computer and mask/snorkle but could have rented
them. He is a PADI certified school and I took a Peak Performance
Bouyancy lesson (went from 29 minutes at 24' to 57 minutes at 24' and
dropped from 17# of weights to 10#.)

I am a beginning diver, having been certified in Dallas August, 2001.
These were both shore dives since Wolf pulls his boat for the winter
months. During the summer it is moored and the options for diving are
greater.

The first dive at Potato Hill Reef was very easy and relaxed. The second
at Woodlands Beach was more interesting but much more surge.

The sand is black volcanic sand. The reefs are healthy and lots of fish.
Dry entertainment comes from touring the volcano sites. The Montserrat
Volcano Observatory (MVO) can arrange special tours for you.

The best thing is the liming. The pace of life here is 25% of the US and
the people are great with virtually no crime. There are many guest houses
or villas to rent at very reasonable rates. Our 8 days at Erindale with
most meals, including Christmas dinner, came to less than $750 total!
Christmas will find us on Montserrat again this year, liming and diving.

To get there you fly to Antigua and take the helicopter or ferry to
Montserrat. Unless you are very cold natured, leave the wetsuit at home.
This is a vacation to lime, dive as a second objective and experience the
Caribbean the way it used to be.

E-mail me if you want more or contact Wolf at krebs@seawolfdiving
school.com to sign up for his newsletter. The last two trips there I got
to witness the volcano's power, sending pyroclastic flows 1 and 2 1/2
miles into the air. An incredible sight! And yes, you are safe. Just
stay out of the exclusion zone.

Montserrat is an adventure and a dive you will never forget. But it is a
trip for the adventurer not the luxury seeker.
