Booked a 5 day trip thru Tina at Catalina ScubaLuv. Flew Philly to Lax, took Super Shuttle Van to Long Beach peir and picked up Catalina Express ferry. (Could have flown into Long Beach if airline/fares allowed). Did check out dive at Casino Point (shore dive). Dove The King Neptune(3 tanks/no guide) for 3 out of the 4 days and Prince Neptune(2 tanks with guide) for one day. Captain Bob and Jamie were a fun team on the King Neptune, very helpful. Jamie briefed us on the sites and even came in on one dive to find some giant sea bass (which he did). Our day on the Prince Neptune was as equally enjoyable with a very enthusiastic crew and divemaster, Vicky. We ran into a pod of Dolphins travelling to a site and they slowed down so we could watch them swim with the boat. The crew seemed as thrilled as we were. The most thrilling, however is the Kepl Forests! Words cannot describe the feeling. It is like flying through a majestic forest. Sun beams through kelp is incredible. Purple and green algea covered rock formations provide the ancor for kelp and a haven for anenome, urhcin, eels and octopus. Saw several bat rays, horn sharks and a beautiful leopard shark. For anyone looking for something as beautiful yet different than tropical reefs this is it! But, the water is much colder. Expected 68 to 70 degrees, but it was more like 59 to 66 with and average of 66. It was particularly cloudy, which is rare for Southern California. Very little current. We stayed at Atwater Hotel. No air, phone in room or elevator (3 floors). Room was very small but clean. No real rinse facilites, but they do have a secure room to store your dive gear. Scuba Luv can also store gear. They were very helpful. Catalina Scuba Luv: 1-800-262-Dive, www.catalina.com/scubaluv.html |
